Highlights from Jay's bookshelves collected over the years.
A wonderful study of the musical language deployed in writing music for film. Andy Hill offers insights into the compositional techniques utilized by composers by analyzing cues from masterpiece film scores. I derive new insights every time I read this book.
Written while Boulez was a sophomore undergraduate at Tulane University, studying with Professor Michael Eckhardt. Each chapter explores composers working and developing the modernist style of the 20th century. One jewel in the book is the description of Stravinsky's rhythmic cell technique from the “Rite of Spring”.
Another book I come back to annually. My love of astrophysics exploded as a teenager as I discovered the writings and television appearances of the master Carl Sagan. The book is a companion to his Emmy Award winning TV series of the same name. I must say: a life changing experience for me! I actually picked my first apartment in Los Angeles because it provided me with a view of the Griffith Observatory!
